The Guest House

Too much going on lately, too many thoughts and emotions… not enough time to capture them in words. So today I want to share someone else’s words that comfort me.

THE GUEST HOUSE
by Rumi

This being human is a guest house
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing.
And invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

One Response to “The Guest House”

  1. I just read through your blog. I’m so sorry that you, too, are on this path. I’m sorry for your pain and I’m sorry for all that you’re going through.
It’s a painful and difficult road, but it does get less dark. After a while. Sometimes after a long while.
You won’t always be in that dark place (I called it a cave). You won’t always get knocked down by the waves of grief that threaten to drown you.
You will get stronger. One day at a time.
